Dear Ms. Moore, I just saw your story on unsung on tvone, and was in shock that you had to endure such hard times. I am glad however that you learned how to forgive for your as well as for your daughter.  I hope to see you at an event should you be near Boston or NYC sometime.  I have always enjoyed your music and loved seeing you in movies and such.  I wish you all the best, and hope to meet you someday.  Much love,  Stephany

Melba,
Looking forward to 'UNSUNG" featuring your story. I remember watching you & Clifton Davis on your show and it was obvious that there was something there..even though I was a lil girl. Anyway, wanted to say that we as women got thru earth scattering life changes that end up making us stronger. After this telecast, you know that your life is gonna change..folks that thought you were in the gutter or people that you thought were friends...will see the great woman, actress, singer.... whatever you wanna be is still here--just new & improved. May God continue to bless & keep u.

Melba, God bless you. I'm so glad to see your still doing your thing. You are one of the pioneers who helped pave the way for people like Rihanna and all those other kids. Remember Hair..... You have to live life in order for your music to be real. You know what I mean. Charlie Parker said if you don't live life it won't come out of your horn. God Bless you and continue the traveling the road. musicians can't help it. much luv girl.......Sumba

Melba, WOW! We just caught you at the Triad in NYC 6/1/09 and what an incredible show. You have an enormous talent and sound as good as you did 35 years ago. Doesn't look like you've aged much in all those years either. Thank you for an unbelievable performance where you blew us out of the house with your voice and drew us to the edge of our seats with your story. It was such a pleasure getting to meet you afterwards. You are a humble and beautiful person, and I know we'll be seeing a whole lot more of you. PLEASE do more shows in NYC. I'm telling everyone about you, but can't find any more show dates. PEACE & LOVE.

Hi Melba!
I've been a fan since your days in HAIR- I was a 14 yr. old groupie, and met you several times.  I've seen you perform on many occassions over the years, and of course have all your recordings, even a couple onlu on LP!
I have a burning question tho- when 6 missing tracks were added to HAIR on CD, one of them is "I Believe In Love".  It is credited to you, but it's a "Sheila" solo:  is that really you singing lead on that song, or is it Lynn Kellogg?  To me, it sounds more like Lynn, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but this has been bugging me for years!  If you can, lemme know for my own piece of mind (and ears)!
Love,
Dave Hutchinson

I have been a fan forever. I've seen you twice here in Jacksonville, Fla. and both times
you were spiritualy sensasional. If it were in my power, I would arrange a celestrial
meeting with you teaming up with Roy Hamilton and Jackie Wilson to create such music that would rearange the stars in the heavens above. God bless you and stay

Hi Melba,
I'm thrilled to have found your site. The first Broadway play I saw was Purlie.  I was 16, and it was my first trip to NYC.  You can't imagine the thrill I had that night.  It launched my love of theatre, and you!  I remember the rocking pit orchestra, with a lady conducter (sorry don't have my program still)that was autographed by you and Cleavon Little). I listen to that cd, as well as all the vinyl I have collected through the years of your beautiful voice.  I'm interested in your new live show, and was wondering if you have any plans for a stop in Chicago.  I'll be the first in line.

Melba Moore, what the most important thing in this world? Christ is the most important thing for the world today ... Adventist and I live in Brazil, more precisely in Brasilia Sobradinho New Hill ... this neighborhood we have a shed where we worship and our dream of it all, 30 members, is just build our church, most important thing for a decadent world ... I would like to ask for aid to be able to build our church, we have RS$ 1500.00 for construction of the punch ... any amount is welcome. God gave you health and perfume gift of voice to the world ... Ms. Moore,

I am a big, big fan of your work.  I've seen most of your movies, one of your stage plays, Pearlie Victorious, and am beginning to collect your work for personal collection of African American super stars.  You at the top of my list.  Nonetheless, my collection is not complete because I've been looking for your performance in Pearlie Victorious for years and cannot find it.  PBS ran the stage play years ago but does not have it listed on items for sale on its Website; Amazon has the original version with Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee; CBS was credited with distribution but does not offer the DVD on its Website; any suggestions are appreciated.

A loyal fan,

Hello Ms. Moore,
I have been trying to find the movie you played in 1981 "Purlie" I am trying to find it for my mom. She will be 75 years old, and she would love to see the play again. I remember seeing it when I was about seven. Can you tell me where I can get a copy.

Last night I saw the legendary Melba Moore at the Rrrazz Room in San Francisco.  I remember her in "Purlee" where I first fell in love with her singing and performance. It was great see this wonderful entertainer back on the stage.  All of her fans turned out to see her in the new room.

I am writing a regional review of her show for www.talkinbroadway.com. It should be in about one week.

I am wondering if you can tell me where I can purchase or obtain a DVD or VHS copy of Purlie(1981 ) Tv musical. I remember seeing it as a child and would love to have a copy to show someone who had never heard of it. I recall also that in elementary school my class won a talent show doing our redition of Purlie... Melba's rendition of Luttibelle Gussie Mae Jenkins was the hit of the show. It would be nice to share this inspirational comedy with my own child....

Hello Melba:
When I was 18, I walked into a music store here in Ottawa Canada and bought your Living To Give LP mostly because of the great cover. I don't think I'd ever seen anything so cute and beautiful ... and with a great Afro. I'll never forget the first time I heard your voice. It sent chills up my spine then and it still does today. I think back to when I first discovered Melba Moore and keep it as a treasured memory. I just re-read a June 17, 1972 article from TV Guide which I had tucked away in your Melba Live! LP.
Thank you for sharing with us for almost 40 years the gift of your wonderful voice.

Hi Melba, this message comes to you from Miss Tina Harrison of the United Kingdom, Birmingham, your music was first brought to my attention when i joined my first group in 1983 and they asked me to sing two of your songs, as they said i sounded like you, the songs i song were, (Loves Coming At Ya and Gotta Make Your Mind Up Tonight), Loves Coming At Ya was a hit where ever we song, you were my inspriration to continue singing and love all your music.  I did give up singing to have my family, which i regret, but i have been asked to start singing again, so i will continue on and practice with your songs, as you have a very powerful vocal range and if you ever decide to visit the UK please feel free to drop me a line so that i can hear you sing, maybe one day i would be able to sing with my idle, god bless you love from Tina  in the UK x

This time, Test of time, Falling, Hold me, Too many lovers, Hair etc.

I don't remember much about your past life but something does hang in the back of my mind and I can't quite figure out what it is. Maybe it's a R&B tune or the TV series.I'm not at all sure.Maybe that is why I was so tongue tied the first time we met. Anyway, it was a pleasure to see you, thanks for the autograph and you are very pretty. (Don't tell my wife I said that.)"

Melba, thank you.
I´m Hannele from Finland, a singer too and 30 years you´ve been my  biggest singer idol.  Here in Finland unfortunately a very few people know about you.  When I first saw your LP sleeve (This is it) and heard you sing, it was a shock - I immidiately knew in my heart that something amazing had happened.  I felt like I had a strange connection with you, and most of all: I felt the Holy Spirit.  Can you imagine!  It was a very strong feeling which I never have lost. I just knew already then that God is with you. And I felt you´re my "sister" in many ways.  This feeling has never left me during 30 years.  Sometimes I have to cry a little when I think about you, I miss you so much just like I would miss a sister if I had one.
I am also a theatre director, and all I know of your career has been an inspiration to me.  I may not see you live never - at least I know you do not come to Finland - but I feel your spirit from here.
God bless you Melba, may He guide you in every step you take.

Dear Melba Moore.  I was just listening to the Choice CD by DJ Louis Vega (of MAW) that is all about music that inspired him to be the great DJ that he is and on that CD is "Standing Right Here".  It is the long version and it is still such a great song.  You go to so many emotional places in that song. You start out pleading and yearning but with hope and subtlely turn to hurt & anger and end up demanding what you deserve from the man who abandoned you.  Girl, you tear it up.  And when you go off @ the end w/ "And I want it!", it is perfection.  I bought all of you albums when I was a kid and I still have them.  i still play "Standing Right Here" & "You Stepped Into My Life" @ any party I throw, and girl, we all get up and dance to them.  I also love your version of "The Long and Winding Road".  You know, dance music is such a wonderful music form but seemingly is not taken seriously by those in charge of the industry, but it has such power and always has throughout the history of this earth.  It causes complete strangers to get together and express complete joy through movement.  I hope you continue to give us great music w/ your inspiring vocals and remember, you will forever create magic w/ those 2 great dance songs from the past.  I love your talent.  Thank you.

Hello, Melba Moore You are such an inspiration to me. I remember seeing you on T.V. acting in the play "Pearlie" I was so impressed. You could do so many things with your voice and your acting was phenomenal. I recently had to perform a monologe of the biblical character Queen Esther at a Women's retreat in Gatlinberg Tennessee, and I drew from what I remembered seeing you perform years ago in the play "Pearlie". The women at the retreat loved my perfomace. I also saw you on TBN Christian Broadcating Televsion in an interview. Melba Moore, I sure would love to meet you in person one day. Will you make that happen for me? You are such a talented woman. Blessings to you! Denise Gordon Cincinnati, Ohio

David Martinez here to let you know that I love the album, "Look What You're Doing To The Man".  I found it in a bin for 1 dollar and I had never heard of you, but I bought it anyway and man was that album great.  It was well produced and your voice was amazing.  I tried adding you as a friend on Myspace, but you don't accept adds from bands.

I am releasing my debut record in Late May and artists like you and many many more are responsible for my growth as a musician.  I went to Hollywood last year and worked with people who have made records and I tell you, that is the only way.

Thank you Melba for being such an inspiration.

Hello Melba,
My mother, Lillie Moore, is a Virginia cousin of yours and she loves your music and has followed your career since the beginning. She used to visit your mother and you in NYC when you moved there, and she babysat you in Virginia, but she doesn't think that you remember that. My mother would love to hear from you, her birthday is in April and I'm including your gospel cd as one of her gifts. If you would like to contact her, she has very fond memories of your mother, please contact me at my email address.
You have a beautiful voice and many family members in Virginia still speak fondly of you. Thank you for your time and God Bless.

Hello Melba Moore,
My name is Ernest Jones and who I am is the possibility of Freedom, Passion and Power. I graduated from Peshine Ave School in 1971. I grew up on Meeker Ave. I currently attend First Tabernacle that is located at 343 Meeker Ave right across from Peshine Ave School. I remember when in the 8th grade we had a class trip to New York to see you perform in the play Perlie. Let me tell you this was a treat to see you perform, knowing you was apart of Peshine Ave as a music teacher. I am in a leadership program at Landmark Education www.landmarkeducation.com  and I have a community  project to support the building of a state of the art synagouge . This would be a center for unity, love, creativity and empowerment. I would love to have you participate in this event. The proposed date is May 11,2008. I would love you to share your passion and courage to never give up. This project is to support Rabbi Curtis G. Caldwell vision to serve the Newark Community www.savedinaflash.com. I would love to speak to you directly 908-531-9392 www.myspace.com/totalsoundexperience.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to appreciate and honor you contribution to the lives of many.

Peace & Love,

Dear Ms. Moore,
You have always been an inspiration to me.  I had the priviledge of meeting you back in 1978  while back stage at the Circle Star theatre in San Carlos, Ca.  You made such an impression on me with your words.
The thing you told me was "not matter what, , never give up hope."  Believe me I have called upon those words many a time in my life since meeting you that evening and when I have been at my most down times,  recalling your words brought me back up.  Thank you so much for that.
By the way your performance was great  that evening and I've never forgotten the power in your beautiful voice.  I wish to thank YOU for never giving up and going on with your God given talent.
May you always be surrounded with God's Angels to keep you safe  from dashing your foot against any stones and  I pray you will always be under the shadow of our allmighty Heavenly Father in Christ Jesus name.

With much respect.

Hi Melba, I have been a huge fan for many years. I am now 50 years old. and I have been a fan as long as I can remember.  As far As I am concerned you never left, I still play the music with you and kashiff. I know right. (smile) Praise God for all of your accomplishments even the valleys for they helped you to become the person and woman of God you were always meant to be. I love you so much and May God continue to smile upon you, your family, and your career and ministry. Your Sister in Christ  Blessings.....:)

Praise the Lord Ms. Moore

I have been a fan of yours ever since I can remember.  It all started so very long ago with "Lean on Me".  It is so good to see you  ( as Frankie Beverly might say ) "back in stride again." I truly thank God for holding you up down through the years.  I recently retired from NYC dept of Correction where I did most of my career on good ole Riker's USA where I worked with the female population.  I am currently writing an autobiography with hopes of finishing it no later than spring.  To be perfectly honest with you I am relying on the Holy spirit to guide me through.  Although I was born and raised in the church I strayed away as we sometimes do.  However, God did see fit  to come see about me filling me with the gift of the Holy Ghost  while working in a trailor on Riker's island in 2003 just before I retired.  ( story within itself )  Today I love and know Jesus for myself which is more than I would ever be able to ask for.  God bless you & may you continue to prosper as your soul prospereth...

Good Day,

God Bless to you and your family.  Many years ago, you met my mother and her children.  I remember you very well.  My mother's name was Mozelle and she was a very good and close friend of Doc's (Charles Gallery).  My mother passed away several years ago and I had wanted to locate Doc.   If there is any way that you can help, I would really appreciate it.  Thank you.

Dear Ms. Melba Moore,

Thank you so much for your contributions of talent and inspiration to youths throughout your career.  I was able to take my first students to see you in "Purlie."  Since then, they have been inspired to follow their creative callings.  In recent years, I had the opportunity to speak with you at the NBTF.  Again, you inspired the young people who accompanied me.  Now, I am writing to you on behalf of a group of talented young people.  The Destiny Productions Theater Ensemble is a group of teenagers from inner city Philadelphia who perform a profound play entitled, "If Only You Knew."  It is designed to address the social ills that young people face, but more importantly, it offers solutions to move to a place of healing.  Because I know that you have a heart for young people, I am asking for an opportunity for these deserving young people to see your performance of "Ain't Misbehavin' " while you are here in Philadelphia.  This opportunity would be a life changing event for these youngsters.  They were blessed to be able to perform at the NBTF in August, and were also invited to be a part of the Reader's Theater.  They did a fantastic job!  I would love to have them see you perform, and if possible, have a few moments of your time to receive your words of encouragement.  I greatly appreciate your work, and look forward to receiving a response to this inquiry.  May God bless you during your stay in Philadelphia.  I can be contacted at 267 246-2665 or at RDestiny51@aol.com.  Sincerely,
Ruth C. Chapman

Dear Melba,

I'm so happy to be on your guestbook. Guess What!!! I've been impressed with your singing for many many years since the 1970's. I listened to your songs, purchased them and studied them. I've always loved your voice. About 3 years ago down at City Hall in Newark during Gospel month I saw you there when you sang "Lift Every Voice." I am a former member of Dr. Albert J. Lewis Jr's choir, World Gospel Musical Association.

I am presently with Proclaim Choir of Montclair, NJ. founded by Ira J. Roberts formerly known as "Chico Mendoza." I haven't kept up with you in a while because I've been on the go but you are still in my heart.  LOVELY VOICE...

The wikipedia website states that your first album release was in 1976.  I have an album of yours that I bought between 1970 and 1972 while I was overseas in the Army.  Is there a mistake on the website?  or do I have an album that wasn't officially released?

Hey There, The other side of the rainbow to me is your greatest hit, would you believe that i've had that song for quite some time now listened it over and over and just today I said I want the lyrics to that song and start searching. and realised that you're a woman of my race as well. Something always pricked me about the race and that voice and today it was confirmed. That song was excellent especially the sustaining part at the end.

My inquiry is 'bout Bonnie Banks, Melba's mum who made great records with the Bunny Banks Trio - ""I don't stand for that Jive"" & The Piccadilly Pipers - ""I'm not cryin' over you, I'm peelin' Onions"" etc etc. Was Clem Moorman - the groups piano man -also Bunny Banks?

"Hello Melba,
Many years ago I work with a lady name Barbara Quarrels(sp?) at Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco. We worked together in Personnel Records as clerks. That was 1972 to 1976. I think of her once in awhile and wonder how she is doing. Today I watched the movie, The Fighting Temptations, and saw your name pop up. I don't follow Hollywood much but your name sounded familiar. I seem to recall Barbara telling me that she had a sister who was a singer/actress by your name. Is that you? Is Barbara your sister? If so please give her my greetings and best wishes. When I knew her she was struggling to raise two teenagers. I moved to Massachusetts and lost track of her. I hope all is well with her. I know she was very proud of her sister, but then, as now, I wasn't familiar with too many names of actresses or musicians. Your songs sounded wonderful at your website. I'll look for your CD. Whether you are Barbara's sister or not you share the same wonderful smile. She was also a very strong woman with a desire to do well. With warm memories and best wishes. Janet"

Melba, please come back  to Houston... I got to see you at the Miller Outdoor Theatre and you were simply wonderful!  If you heard someone screaming your name, that was me! I love your angelic voice, your talent and your spirit. I fell in love with your spirit when I was a teenager.  I followed you in Purlie, I raced through homework to watch you and Clifton Davis in your variety show.  I thought you and Clifton Davis were the perfect couple ( l loved Clifon too).  I was so disappointed when you two separated.  And have always I loved your music. When I heard "Lean On Me"  for the first time, that was it for me.. It still remember how your voice just brought chills all over me.. I still have the album.  I remember setting the turn table arm to play that song over and over again.  There aren't many artists I  go "coo coo for coco puff" over, but you are certainly one of them - Prince is the other... Pure god-given talent... All -around talent.  You do it all.  I truly missed you... Please bring your one woman show  to Houston   You are a gem! SAC

"Welcome Back! I've always wondered what happened to the awesome singers from the 70's and 80's. I went to the bookstore and saw that you had a gospel CD out! I purchased it, and have been blessed by it ever since. Sometimes when God takes us through the trials, tribulations, storms and whirlwinds, we don't understand it, but God knows everything. May He continue to use your voice, your testimonies to bring healing and deliverance to the nation. God Bless you and your daughter."

First: For all those who would like to have a DVD of Purlie with Melba Moore: MovieLead is a Hollywood company which provides old move/video footage to the industry. The video and audio weren't exactly High Def., but it's all there for $50: 866-259-2136.
Second: I feel like know Melba Moore, though I never met her in person! She attended Montclair State College's Music Department a few years before I started my Masters there in voice and theater arts. In addition, we both taught music in Newark Public School District.
Even though I now live in Texas, I still manage to get back to NYC every couple of years to see the best of the Broadway theater.
With all my years of seeing shows and (in what seems like a past lifetime) performing professionally in shows (AE), I can say,
without a doubt, that the singularly most astounding vocal performance I ever saw on stage was Melba Moore in Purlie. I went back 3 times to see her.
Now that I have a DVD of her performance, I have played it for others who are also amazed.
THANKS MELBA!! for giving me an unforgettable experience in the theater.

"I read Jennifer O'Neill's book: You're Not Alone: Healing Through God's Grace After Abortion. Your name was listed in the section ""Good News in Hollywood"", it mentioned that you are a Hollywood pro lifer and a ""lover of life"". I wanted to congratulate you on your courageous stance for life especially being among your brazen and unabashedly ""pro-choice"" pro-abortion, pro-death community of celebrities. I wanted to encourage you with God's grace to continue boldly proclaiming God's Truth about the sanctity and dignity of all human life from conception to natural death. God has given you a very potent and powerful platform to hopefully reach many hearts and souls with the Message of Life. When you speak many listen and with God's grace conversions of heart, mind and soul will occur and lives will be saved. One day with God's grace pro-choice will mean to CHOOSE LIFE!
""For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul?"" Mark 8:36
Thank you and God bless you!"

Melba co stars alongside Petula Clark, Tennesse Ernie Ford and Wayne Newton. She sings a great version of MR BOJANGLES and WE'LL SING IN THE SUNSHINE along with lots of ensemble numbers.

If anyone would be interested in seeing this great 1970s special please contact me privately."

I must tell you though, I am a female illusionist. My stage name is Delores Van-Cartier and you are one of my favorite people to perform. I just have one question, I have been looking for your album Solitary Journey and can't find it any where. I had it before long time ago, but it was stolen with alot of other things of mine at a show.....can you please tell me where I can get it from or can someone tell me, I would really really love to have it again. "R&B Singer Luther Vandross Dies

""The Insider"" has confirmed that R&B legend LUTHER VANDROSS passed away Friday at the age of 54. Sources tell ""The Insider"" that Vandross' death was unexpected, and that a memorial service is planned in New York sometime next week. The singer sold over 25 million records during a long and successful career that began in the 1970s. In 1981, he released his debut album, Never Too Much, and went on to become one of the most popular musicians of the 1980s, cranking out lasting hits like ""Here and Now"" and ""The Best Things in Life Are Free."" Vandross hit the top of the charts again in the '90s with a duet with MARIAH CAREY of ""Endless Love."" His soulful pop crooning went on to inspire artists like USHER and ALICIA KEYS, as well as ""American Idol"" and record labelmate RUBEN STUDDARD. Sources also report that a tribute album for Vandross is in the works. In April 2003, Vandross suffered a stroke due in part to his struggle with diabetes; he then spent close to a month in a coma, and battled meningitis and pneumonia after the attack."

"finally I get to write you Ms. Moore......many many years ago I had the distinct pleasure of your concert held in Halifax, Nova Scotia.....although at the time (early 80's) not many knew of what they were going to miss if they did not attend your performance...the crowd was thin but faithful...you were scheduled for two shows...I went to the first show and was dismayed at the low turnout....HOWEVER, your band came out and wowed everyone with the opening number...then...at last you appeared....and I think a bit startled that the crowd was few, but you opened and sand and I went to butter all over again hearing oyur voice live...(I had been following your career years before that night) what impressed me was your words after the first number.....you said hello and welcomed us to the concert hall ....and that obviously we were your true fans and that you were going to ""give us what you would give at Carnegie Hall"" and wow!!! you did!! it was then and now a highlight in my life.....

it is hard to get black gospel music in Halifax....I suppose the market is distinct to a group most major stores don't cater to musical needs...however I am ordering you CD today....as I know God Delivers...and so do you!! Bless you Melba as always God Be With You!

Melba Moore
When Melba Moore replaced Diane Keaton for the lead role in the musical ""Hair"" it was reportedly the first time a black actress replaced a white actress on Broadway. When Moore performs at the Asolo Mertz Theatre in Sarasota on Monday her two-act performance ""Sweet Songs of the Soul"" will include singing and between song narration chronicling her remarkable career.

Years ago I saw a stage play called, ""Momma Im Sorry,"" and I remember you in it. I was wondering if you or your management team could point me in the right direction to getting a hold of that on VHS or DVD? I would be such a blessing to me and my family. Thank you very much for your time. Blessings"

"Ms. Moore, I'm probably one of your newest fans. Let me begin by saying what an AMAZING talent you are. I'm currently listening to your ""older"" stuff (Free, Lean on me, Playboy Scout) and I'm in a state of ""WOW."" It's hard to title these tracks as ""older"" since there sound and your voice are timeless. While listening to your music...I had to find out more about you, so I googled your name and was excited to read about your MANY accomplishments. This is truly something to be proud of. Your talent has trascended and transformed many.

Have you thought of coming to San Francisco?? The Empire Plush Room at the York Hotel has a great cabaret space for you, possibly your one woman show.

You sang ""The Long And Winding Road,"" and I bet you held that ending note for a minute and a half! I ran out the next morning, and bought ""Peach Melba,"" which I still have on vinyl to this day. Whenever it's played, friends all want to know where they can get it. ""Green Birds Fly,"" ""I Am His Lady""...they're all just awesome. Will ""Peach Melba"" ever be released on CD? "Review of Melba's song

Melba Moore - ""My Heart Belongs To You"" (Soulfuric)
Reviewed by Dean Serafini

This is a track that people have been talking about for the best part of six months now in the time since the WMC. Melba Moore has been recording since the eighties and the height of the disco boom: this represents her first new material for quite some time. It’s quite a coup then for Soulfuric to pull off a combination that includes Moore herself, production from Ron Carroll and a remix from Jon Cutler. As for the track itself, there are three versions included beginning with Ron Carroll’s BMC Vocal Mix complete with gentle guitars, strings and a thunderous bassline which sounds even better the louder you play it. Next up comes John Cutler’s Distant Music Mix, which leans heavily towards the keyboards. Finally the WaWa dub goes straight for the kill with its beefed up beats whilst using the original guitars and strings from the to create a real main room vibe. The vocals are of course impeccable and combine with the production to make Ms Moore’s first foray into the 21st Century house scene a striking success."

"Dear Ms Moore
I too am a long time fan of yours. You and a lot of other african american women have been so inspirational to me all of my life. I will be celebrating my 50th birthday on December 8 of this year. So you know I have been following all african american women all of my life. We have come a long way and I am proud to know that you are one of the inspirational women in my life. I remember the struggle we as african americans had to go through. When I saw our people on tv, it was a joy. Nothing gave me more joy than to see you, Sherman Hemsley Clifton Davis & Robert G in Purlie. I have a lot of favorites, such as Porgie & Bess, All of Paul Robeson, Carmen and a lot more. I am a collector of old movies and plays, and I can't understand why Purlie is so hard to find and why they have not shown it in all of these years. We see other old plays and movies, but not Purlie. Can you please tell me how to obtain a copy of it to add to my collections. All my children have been trying to find it for my birthday, but I thought I would lend them a hand and contact the source. Please let me know how and where I can get a copy of one of the most entertaining films of all time.
Thank you

Wow, I can't believe I'm actually writing this. Nonetheless, in 1970 while visiting New York, my father was kind enough to take me to the Ed Sullivan Theater to see you, along with Cleavon Little and Sherman Hemsley in Purlie. I Got Love that night!!!! I've been a fan ever since. Let's fast forward....and then there were the Fighting Temptations!!! You were in rare form and the voice is solid!!! You talent is real but more than that, it is a timeless gift from God. The Tony Award was awesome but I believe that the best is yet to come......Much Love and Best Wishes!!!!!!"

I especially appreciate your abortion testimony. Many of us who had abortions during those early days were never able to conceive afterwards. My abortion is my greatest heartache & often deepest secret. I applaud your public testimony. The second thing that I'd like to say to you is ...Girl, you've gotta put more stories and Gospel in your play. I felt the annointing of the holy spirit come over me as your music pearced
my soul with such strong convictions. I am now 44 years old and a six pack away from being fifty. (Smile)

I look forward to hearing your new CD titled ""I'm Still Here"" and watching you perform at the Florissant Valley Community College on Friday February 3, 2006.

I also would like to call upon you to review and indorse the ""Wailing Women Ministry"" which I have already forwarded information and a slid show presentation to your booking manger.

Thank you for all of your past and future support!

Sincerely,

Deacon Allen D. Wheeler Sr."

"One of the most talented and versatile performers of the last 40 years, Melba Moore has carved an impressive legacy on Broadway, television and radio.

A unique combination of beauty and talent, Moore began her career as a backing vocalist for such artists and Ashford & Simpson, Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. Her big break came when she was offered a leading role in the Broadway production of the musical Hair. She was superb in the role, and opened the door for a generation of African American females on Broadway. Her performance in Hair resulted in other prime roles, including leads in Purlie (for which she won a Tony Award), Les Miserables, and Your Arm’s Too Short to Box With God.

Her national star began to rise in the 70s, as she arrived on CBS with the Summer replacement series The Melba Moore Show. She also became a successful recording artist, scoring a top 5 hit with her first release, “I Am His Lady.” As the late 70s arrived, Moore capitalized on the burgeoning disco market, landing a big hit with a cover of the Bee Gees’ “You Stepped Into My Life” as well as McFadden & Whitehead’s “Standing Right Here.”

In the early 80s, Moore continued to work with McFadden, but moved to a more sophisticated, adult sound on her recordings, landing her first #1, the great cut “Falling,” along with the hit “Read My Lips” and the smash duet with Freddie Jackson, “A Little Bit More.”

A series of devastating personal and financial setbacks in the late 80s knocked Moore out of the spotlight and the entertainment world, and she was virtually unheard of for nearly a decade. She reemerged in the mid 90s, taking roles in a number of traveling Soul and Gospel music plays, including her autobiographical Sweet Songs of the Soul, and touring with Cissy Houston, Shirley Caesar and other Gospel greats. She also recorded a Gospel album and made a critically acclaimed performance in the Gospel-comedy film The Fighting Temptations. Her “comeback” culminated in 2004 with the release of the CD Nobody But Jesus.

Review of Nobody But Jesus
Nobody But Jesus is Melba Moore’s first release in several years, and, while the disc is a mixed bag, it is certainly a welcome return for this talented vocalist. Those who wondered whether Moore, now in her late 50s, could still sing, will be pleasantly assured by the new disc. Whether handling acoustic ballads, uptempo call-and-response numbers, or all out Gospel belters, her voice is thoroughly enjoyable throughout.

It is in elements beyond Moore’s voice that the album runs into problems, the foremost being the disc's tinny arrangements. An overabundance of synthesizers and programmed drums rather than real musicians (a sign that the album was recorded on the cheap) mars what would otherwise be a very solid undertaking. This is especially true on the fairly pedestrian upbeat gospel numbers “There is Power in the Blood,” “Higher Ground” and “Praise Yah.” Moore overcomes the sonic limitations on the nice ballad “Master and Friend” and covers of the traditional “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” (here a midtempo number) and “Precious Lord” (which she absolutely nails vocally). By far the highlights of the album are a couple of strong cuts that move away from traditional Gospel and into a more current, soulful groove. “Call Me” is a terrific Aretha-like song that Moore handles beautifully, and “Rise My Sister,” the most modern sounding cut on the album, is a wonderful song of empowerment and faith, with great vocal arrangements and the best production on the album. It is a truly wonderful performance by Moore and one of the most infectious songs I’ve heard this year."

"Hi Melba,

I've always loved your voice, and you sound as great today as you did the first time I heard you sing. I also wanted to mention how great it was of you to help out at the Angela Bofill benefit concert in Begen last week.

For anyone who's interested in helping Angela, who recently suffered a stroke and unfortunately has no insurance for medical expenses, it has been announced that all proceeds from her new live album ""Live From Manila"" will be used to help cover some of those expenses. I co-wrote ""Let Me Be The One' with Angela and Alan Palanker, (and will donate my writer royalties as well), and I'm hoping to generate interest in the live CD so that we can all pitch in and help her out. You can hear highlights of ""Live From Manila"" at my website: ricksuchow.com or go directly to liveatnite.com to purchase. Let's spread the word! And thank you again Melba, you are a blessing. We are lucky to have you among us."

"Dear Ms Moore,
When my Dad called me yesterday to ask what I was doing Saturday I said I had to work. He then said if I wasn't doing anything how would I like tickets to your show for my birthday. I was at work but I squealed anyway and said yes! I love live entertainment. Some how though I don't think this will be just entertainment. You see I recently ran into a friend I hadn't seen in 25 years. Infact he was my first boyfriend when I moved to Phoenix AZ. I came to find out he was a man of God (a pastor) that seemd to be placed back in my life to bring me closer to the word. This X-mas I gave my life to the Lord and ever since, he is everywhere I am. I didn't know you were a gospel artist now. This will make my birthday present even more special. I can't wait to see you on the 28th. When I lived in Oh as a girl I played the flute in the highschool band. One year they did a production of the play Purlie back in the early eighties and I played in the orchestra. I loved the play.
Just wanted to thank you for being what will probably be another unbelievable and memorable moment in 2006 for me. Thanks in advance and God Bless.

Sincerely,
Angie"

"May 13, 2006

Dear Melba Moore,

While I did some chores around the house this morning, I played albums (albums, not CDs) by Ella, Sarah, Lena, Nina, and you – your ""A Portrait of Melba."" I have to tell you, as I listened to you sing ""You Are My River"" and all the other songs, I kept asking myself, ""Where does that remarkable voice come from? How can anyone sing so well? Where is Melba Moore right now? – I would love to attend an “Evening with Melba” performance in NYC this summer.""

Therefore, I turned on my computer and Googled ""Melba Moore,"" which brought up this site. Thank God you are still singing and, honey child, you look gorgeous. You look ageless and glowingly healthy.

Today, I will renew my support of your artistry by purchasing your latest album. Today, I will tell someone, friend or stranger, that Ms. Melba Moore is still kicking butt vocally. Today, I will think of you off-and-on, all day.

Best wishes,

Peggy Tartt

"Now I understand ""floating on air."" It's a metaphor for when leaving an amazing performance, while trying to walk with at least one foot on the ground. The only thing better than seeing Melba Moore in person is an intimate cabaret setting, where it's almost like being in her living room, albeit oversized. So when I heard that she was appearing at the Plush Room, I didn't have to ponder. I was there.

Prior to that, the closest I've been to Ms Moore was watching a screen, so I was filled with anticipation. When I shared my enthusiasm, people kept asking me, ""What did she sing?"" Researching a bit, I realised my lack of a snappy answer is that I've got many, many songs by her on CD and reel. Most of them great, since she's worked with legendary songwriters and producers over the years, all of whom were undoubtedly delighted to have her grace their material.

Without revealing Melba's age, I'll repeat her axiom, ""Everything old ain't bad."" She still looks great, not a kid, still slight enough to amaze with such a powerful voice emanating from such a tiny person. As she assured us, she's been away, but not watching soaps and eating potato chips. (Not a very enticing prospect.)

She arrived belting out ""This is It,"" one of her signature tunes. Right away, I realised this performance was going to be special. She explained that she would not be doing new material on her ""Return of Peach Melba"" tour. (She didn't actually do any ""Peach Melba"" songs, but that's okay.) Dancing along, she apologised if she had to sit down at some point if the Excedrin wore off. She's getting hip surgery soon; until then, she's enjoying herself. Wasn't there an album, ""Dancing with Melba?"" The audience seemed to be enjoying the music almost as much as I was, and I was delighted.

Melba did some upbeat tunes, including ""Love's Comin' At Ya,"" explaining that she had a few dance hits, but she wasn't the disco queen, who would probably be Donna Summer. There were autobiographical breaks featuring folks like Ashford & Simpson and the late McFadden & Whitehead. Mentioning Kashif, she said when she mentions him, people usually say, ""Gesundheit!""

A highlight was her rendition of ""Falling,"" done differently from the recording that I've listened to enough times to memorise, but I liked the phrasing better and the ending, a long held note. Melba was famous for her sustained notes, vocal range and dexterity. If anything, she has gotten better, seeming to perform these incredible musical feats effortlessly. I've heard her do this on recordings; in person I was in awe. When I mentioned later that she'd changed some songs a bit, she explained that she and the band were new to each other. Fine with me, for the combo of piano, keys, drums, bass and guitar gave as good as they got.

We learned of how she broke into Broadway. Jerome Ragni asked her if she'd like to do ""Hair,"" which infuriated young Melba. ""I didn't get a BA in music to do nobody's hair."" After he'd explained that it was the name of a musical, she signed up, later to replace Diane Keaton, the first time a Black performer replaced a white one on Broadway. She did a ""Hair"" medley with ""Easy To Be Hard,"" ""Aquarius"" and ""Let the Sunshine In,"" each unique and special performances. Then from ""Purlie,"" the title song and ""I Got Love,"" written for her when audiences demand another song from that girl.

She switched gears with ""I Concentrate on You"" by Cole Porter, a spellbinding interpretation which gave the band a chance to get in a few jazzy licks, ending with a spectacular high note where she lowered the mike, I guess to avoid overpowering it. Man! That's all I can say.

There was a musical overview of musicians she worked with and helped, including Me'lissa Morgan and Freddie Jackson. Melba sang a bit of ""Do Me Baby."" Getting back to Kashif, she did part of a song he wrote for Whitney Houston, ""You Give Good Love."" On to McFadden & Whitehead's big hit, ""Ain't No Stopping Us Now,"" which was terrific and appropriate.

Her final number was ""Lean On Me,"" which she changed a bit to reflect her religious awakening. Many of those associated in any way with Disco has shared that experience. ""Lean On Me"" is an incredible recording, but the singer made it come alive. One of the things I love about Melba Moore is that she can toss in vocal pyrotechnics without forgetting the song. She's not gimmicky, she's soulful. We even shared a special Melba toast.

Driving back to Pacifica, I tried to recall any performer I'd ever seen who came close to creating such magic. I've been a fan for at least thirty years, but it was not the high of seeing someone I've admired for decades. I'm afraid Melba is so special even I, gt, cannot think of a way to describe her. You'll have to see Melba when she comes to your town."

"Hello Melba....

First I must say that you are to be comended for carrying on the legacy of creating great music. I don't have your latest CD as yet. However, after visting your very classy website and listening to the music. I plan on buying it today. I understand that you will be at the Apollo very soon. This is a pleasent suprise and I plan on being there. You may not remember that we met many years ago in the music building in New York. Then again on a bus leaving from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. I would like to make it up to you for not speaking. I just wasn't sure it was you. It was just to hard to believe that you were on my bus. For so long I've wanted to tell you that. Do you still do "" Lean On Me "" in your act? I have a classic Soul Train performance of you perfoming that song. Which is outstanding. Well I won't take up any more of your time.

Stay Well

"Dear Melba,
This note is to inform you of the passing of Vanessa ""Funmi"" Kennedy, whom you may remember as the contact person of ""Living The Experience"", Lancasters Underground Railroad tours.
She went home to glory on January 29, 2006. Suddenly, painlessly .
Her memories of you and the shows you did there were some of her fondest,
I was her roomate for the past 4yrs, and was with her at her death."

"I first heard this amazing voice when I was 7 years old. My mom bought the then newly released 'THIS IS IT"" LP. As soon as I heard that sweet voice turn into such a POWER HOUSE, I knew that not only had I found my new musical love, but I too would become a singer. I have actually had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Miss Moore (Buffalo, NY: Variety Club Telethon 2000). It was a dream come true and afforded me the chance to tell Melba how much I love her and have admired her for years. I am almost 37 years old and I am still inspired by the woman, the artist, the Warrior for Christ that is Melba Moore. God Bless You and DON'T EVER BE ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST!"

"Melba, I'm just crazy for your music, been listening to you since 1973 in musical theater class, grew up in Pennsylvania, Purlie, and then I was a
disco kid, and I even have a video clip
of you on a Bing Crosby Christmas special. You are to my generation, the Lena Horne. How bout some standards,
even Queen Latifah did it, You have soooo Much talent. I still listen to Candi Staton too, and always wished she would have given us a few more dance tunes. I love spirituals too, and I'm
white to the bone. How about ""I want to live with God"", Or day is dying in the
west""?? Sister Act II was so awesome for goosebumps, and so are you, so let's
Hear you sing Out!!!
Hallelujah, and Praise the lord!

Lots of love,
Donny"

"I found a old album once of melba moore back in 1985, i was very young 12 i believe, and during that time i did'nt know who melba moore was so i decided to play the album. And there was one song on the album where melba moore held a note for a very long time i am currently looking for that album on cd but its hard. I'm gonna try melba greatest hits or the best of until i find it i can't remember the name of the song. But i know the picture melba had on the cover when i see it. I feel r&b music is in trouble right now, all the ones like Melba Moore Aretha Franklin Patti Labelle Stephanie Mills Chaka Kahn dont have new music out unless its gospel. Then entertainers like mary j blige and monica who does have new music out to me they are more hip/hop, that seems to be who they currently give record deals to the ones with hip/hop back grounds. I get emails from people telling me to watch bet j channel thats about the only thing left that comes close, I saw Lionel Richie, Herbie Hankcock. My favorite song by Melba Moore featured alot of stars called Let Freedom Ring."

"I'd have loved you forever, and have felt spiritually connected to you, but TODAY, it is OFFICIAL! ( by being logged into your guest book. it feels GREAT to be an OFICIAL FAN of YOURS) Melba, you have been a very early & major inspiration in my singing career. However, I remember one of my earliest recitals as a dancer was to ""Lean On Me"", I'd never heard anyone hold a note so high & so long at the same time & I was always intrigued by that, so I would sing along with you over & over til one day... a miracle, I could hold the note! so you have truly been my mentor & vocal coach over the years & although I was fortunate to meet you on several occassions, including when you sang at the Harlem Chamber of Commerce's- Vogue at the Midtown Marriot Hotel & also at the Wingate Festival in '06, I never got to express the beautiful impact you have made on my life, on which I could write a BOOK!
TODAY, March 24,2007 I am HONORING you at a special Woman's History Month program in Tribute to ""The Women who have Made Us Who We Are"" at The New Amsterdam Musical Assoc. in New York (The oldest Union for Black Musicians-102yrs. old!) This is what has lead me to your website, etc. in the wee hours of the morning, building my research & the more I learn is the deeper I love, respect & HONOR you, your pioneering spirit, your strength, courage & determination as well as your ageless beauty, positive enegry, amazing talent & awesome accomplishments is truly a testiment of you as a LIVING LEGEND! Keep On Shinning Your Divine Light, you are a blessing to so many of us in the World & Thank you for re-Lighting the Torch of our Black National Anthem!"

"Melba. Incredible performance tonight in Chicago at the SWWT benefit concert. I am so glad I got to meet you in person. Truly God has given you a passion to reach the unreachable. I would be honored if you read my book. The one I gave you. It is a soul rendering and truly timely for such a time as this. This novel is one that shouts victory because we overcome by the words of our testimony. I too am a survivor, of many things, which is what compelled me to write the book. Feel free to reach out to me and let me know what you think about it. Travelling mercies. Truly you are the apple of His eye."

One of my favorite L.P.s was/is Portait, starting with ""You Are My River."" I'm praying that this CD will be re-release- its timeless. I've seen Melba perform at Central Park which the ""This is it"" was released-- Melba's Magic on stage. Speaking of the stage, A Night in St. Lucia is excellent, a must see. Melba's sings ""Ella"".
